Pay to Play

16 Jun

I recently encountered an MMO Champion thread that made me /sigh.

This is the thing you have to know about MMO champion threads.  A lot of the time, the original post is a quality question or comment, suggestion or spiel.  In this case, the poster asked “when a number of US realms when down for 24 hours, did Blizzard hand out a free day?”

Let’s get two things straight.  First, a lot of realms where still playable.  Second, Blizzard stipulates a certain amount of down time each week (in fact, they make no promises the game will be playable on ANY Tuesday ) in their terms of service.  So we still had our game, but we might not have had our mains.  We didn’t lose out on something we pay for, we are just really used to getting something for free (play time on Tuesdays).

Naturally, the replies to this post are where the uneducated, ill-informed, or just downright self-important rabble crawl out.  As is often the case with an MMO forum post, i should have stop reading after I got my answer.  Blizzard did not credit the day.  Replies to this varied from “how could they stoop so low” to references to the the 300 movie.

What do you guys think?  Should Blizz do the goodwill of crediting a day, or should they use the 5 or 6 million dollar toward development of future content?

actually quite often they do and it just doesn’t get credited until the next pay cycle comes up. So there is a very good possibility of it being done unless a Blizzard rep stated that they aren’t going to

True story, although the only point I’m making is they do not have to credit it.
